Ive known about this 68 XR7G for a few yrs now here in Tucson
its been sitting 20 yrs or more, and although the female owner loved
the car, it was out in the Az elements and sat for many yrs out
in the sun etc.
A few days ago, we struck a deal and its now in one of my garages.:jump3:
68 XR7G Hertz car, 390 4v etc.
Sometime long ago, the previous owner had installed some metel flares
to the car and even after all these yrs no signs of any cracking, pretty
amazing actually. Im not fond of them and eventually they will probably be
removed. The last few days Ive just been trying to clean it out and take
inventory of whats there etc and get an idea of what overall its going
to need. Having keys made today, and after cleaning out the fuel system,
changing the oil, and lubing up the cylinders, Im going to try to start it.
From there its all down hill, right ? haha.
My first car ever was a 71 Cougar, which soon after was a 70 Eliminator
sunroof car. 50 cars or so later, I found another cool project Ive been
wanting for a while.
Ill have more pics soon.

Nice find, hope it gets all put back together. Is this in the registry? Probably should check to make sure this one is accounted for.

I thought I had covered every alley and back road around Tucson while searching back in 2003, it looks like I missed a good one. Congratulations.

DOH! My G-dar must be busted... Congratulations!

Let the fun begin. What ever you do, replace the gas tank and lines before you try to start the car, or us a small gas can and by pass every thing else. Good Luck!

I usually flip most of the cars I find for fun and profit but this
one I want to keep for a while. I have a small collection already.
As for bringing them back to life, I go thru a process from front to
back and cross my fingers and hope for the best.
Heres another pic..

OMG those flares!!! Is the original wheel arch underneath there somewhere to make it easier to get the original shape or where they cut out completely?

I'm betting they are GONE, but anything is possible. If they are still there, they would have certainly give the opening more support.

Keeping my fingers CROSSED for you.

Congratulations with your new cat. I just noticed that the car is built the same day as my Hertz car and that the serial number is 20 higher than on mine which is 545117. That makes me think that these two cars must have been pretty close or next to each other on the production line. *
I saw this car when I was looking for a G a few years ago. It is good to see that it will be taken care of and hopefully restored back to original condition. :)

Congradulations on saving another great car from extinction. Are you going to try and save the fenders since there originals? Love the color combo.

thanks

thanks all...
when I finally get to the body, and if I decide to do away with the flares.
Ill sell the flares off the car to maybe someone building a road race version Cougar.
Both front fenders complete as is and cut out the rear arches and weld in some good
used ones. I already have replacement parts lined up and buying them next week
just in case. All are nice az sheetmetal.
yes, Im in Tucson, but not part of the Az club.
I also have a 70 Boss Eliminator Cougar too in the other garage. :)
