Its time to replace the factory alternator. I believe the stock one is 61 amps, correct? Should I upgrade to a higher amp or is 61 fine? Everything is basically stock. I have never really driven the car, so I dont really know if the volts drop at a stop light or what.

Alternator ratings 1968 Cougars

The factory available alternators for a 1968 Cougar were rated at 38, 42 and 55 amps respectively. Aftermarket rebuilt alternators are typically rated at 65 amps so that one part number can fit any Ford application from 1965 through 1981.

Summit (www.summitracing.com) sells a 100 amp replacement alternator for $119 outright in either plain, black powder coat or chrome finish. While that sounds appealing on the surface an upgrade in wire size for the charging circuit might be a good idea, something like 4 AWG for that kind of current. I would stick with the 65 Amp part store version unless you are running a major stereo system.
