Installed a tremec tko 500 in my 67 Cougar a week or so back, and it has been a huge improvement. Now I'm cruising at roughly 1500 rpm versus 2500 before, and for the first time in years I went on the highway, at roughly 2000 versus 3000 before. The overdrive and sharper shifting is awesome. Had a Ford toploader, wide ratio, for many years before. Kept my factory cast iron (truck) bell housing along with the clutch and pressure plate, none of which was touched during the switchout. Got it with the classic Hurst shifter handle, which is too tall in my opinion - I'll be getting one roughly 2" shorter. Overall it was quick and easy to change out. Hardest part was dealing with the "donut" tremec puts on the tail shaft - I wish they wouldn't have.

Did you use a C5TA truck bellhousing? I have saved one for that application because it is about .625" deeper.
If so, did the shifter end up in the right location?
Or did you have to cut out the shifter opening?
Which rear cross-member did you use? 390 4-speed?

Nice swap! You can buy a shorter handle from Hurst. You don't need to buy the entire shifter.

Funny you ask that, because I did have to cut the shifter opening years ago when I put the 4 speed in the car, due to the truck bellhousing (I didn't realize there was a difference at the time). This time, the shifter did end up in the right location. After careful measuring, I did space the transmission another .140 away from the bellhousing so the input shaft would clear the pilot bearing. The tremec transmission required the specific rear crossmember, which is much lower than the 4 speed crossmember.
