I have a '68 Cougar with power steering and I have more play in the steering than wanted. Can someone please explain the procedure to tighten the steering box to reduce the amount of play if even possible?

Thanks,
Nate

In my experience you can tighten more than a quarter turn or so, but what you need to do is make sure to do it at center. Tighten the screw until it is just snug and temporarily tighten the nut. Then, run the steering shaft back and forth near middle travel to check for any binding or increased steering effort at the center point. You want the bolt to be as tight as possible without causing bind or increased effort at center point. If no bind, tighten the screw a little more and test again. When you get a little bind, back off just a tad until no bind.

This all is best done with the box out of the car.

Hope this helps you.

Regards,

Bob
