Well Jeff,
There can be many causes to this problem, most common is a fuse or broken wire.
Bad grounds can also cause this as can a number of small things.

Need to know a few things first.
A: What year Cat we talking
B: When did it stop and what were the circumstances.
C: Have you added anthing to the car?

PLMK and we can go from there.

well its a 69 xr-7, when I got the car the tack didn't work, and the only thing I've don was put a new gas tank in it, new valve covers,a new air cleanerand a new sequencial chip in it.

I had problems with my tach, I traced it to a missing ground strap from the firewall to the engine but it killed my tach and I had to replace it. Another thing that happens is the solder joints inside the tach go bad, in that case all you need to do is resolder them.
