OK I have managed to revive all the lights and switches that were left unattended to by the previous owner but one. Can someone give me a clue as to why the tach does not work. There is a glimmer of hope as it climbs but only gets to about 750 rpms and stops. I have tried to trace wires all to no avail (couldn't find one hooked to the coil like I expected). My next step is probably a wiring diagram but I thought I would see if there was a quicker fix.
Thanks all.

What I would do is hook up a different tach to the same wires as the tach in your dash, and see if a different tach works the way it should. I suspect that your problem is in the tachometer itself. If the alternate tach works then the tach in your dash is broke and may or may not be fixable. If it still does not perform properly then you know it's time for a wiring diagram. Just a suggestion - Chad
