I thing the answer is going to be yes - a tach is a tach...
While it might be a little more expensive then pulling one from a salvage yard, for tuning the carb on my 68, I am picking up a Dwell\Tachometer gauge from Autozone: <a href='http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Actron-Analog-Dwell-tachometer-voltmeter-automotive-analyzer-with-zero-adjust-for-maximum-accuracy/_/N-26lr?counter=0&filterByKeyWord=dwell&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=122882_0_0_'>Actron Analog Dwell\tachometer\voltmeter automotive analyzer</a>. For under $40 (about $30 price matched to NAPA), I figure I don't have to mess around with making something work, just connect and adjust idle and AF mixtures.
