HI ALL,
question, i just did a deal for a standard column and cash for the tilt out of my 70 eliminator(eliminator wasnt supposed to have a tilt). But this is the question the locking mechanism for the standard column doesnt lock.. Is there a certain part i need?.Or can it be repaired? What i mean by locking is the steering wheel, the wheel spins freely when the key is out .
thanks
pat

I have had the key ignition switch apart (and I mean apart)
one my 89 Ford truck and there is a pointed pin that pushes
in place to lock the steering wheel frm turning. I suppose it may be the same on your cougar column lock.

If I remember the 70 correctly, when you turn the key it releases a pin that falls into holes drilled into the steering wheel (under the pad). To check it, pull the pad off and look through the holes in the wheel to see if the pin is still there. If there isn't any holes, you may have a 69 steering wheel. If the pin is there, it could just need some lub or some adjustment to put it back in action.
