Yesterday was the strangest mix of bad and good luck. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

I left home in my 40 year old car without a cell phone (68 std coupe).<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Flooded it a little starting it up and taking it out of the driveway…the car was having a tough time shaking it off.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Stalled at the bottom of the hill I live on, running rough…stalled at the bank machine.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Opened the hood, there’s gas everywhere.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Locked it up, walked to the grocery store to pick up some rags to soak up some of the gas so I can see where the leak is coming from, and realized I left my wallet laying on the passenger seat after throwing it there when stalled at the bank machine.<o:p></o:p>

Go back to the car, wallet is still there, soak up the fuel, try cranking it over a bit….<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
…fuel everywhere, so much I can’t tell where the hell the leak is coming from (suspect stuck or sunken float). <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Lock up the car, look across the parking lot, there is a CAA truck on his day off.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
Got him to give me a tow home (thank god I’m a member) and while he is hooking up, I realize, not only did I lock the keys in the car, but the keys are in the ON position WITH AN ENGINE BAY FULL OF FUEL! (WTF?!?!?!?! When the hell do I lock the keys in the car?!?!?! …and when the hell do I leave the keys in the ON position?!?!?!)

Got the car back home, late for the afternoon shift at work, I didn’t get any of my crap done and worse, I didn’t have any lunch!<o:p></o:p>

Luckily I had a nice fairly fresh 67 2V carb sitting in the garage atop my 67 2v 289!<o:p></o:p>

…never leave the house in a 40 year old car without tools and without your phone!<o:p></o:p>

<o:p>That was my reminder of what it was like to drive a carburated car 20+ years ago. Ah yes, I remember now!</o:p>

I can't lock the keys in my 69. I have to use them to lock the door.

Push down the lock with the door open, then hold in the door handle button while closing the door.

No Mary Jane here, but you wouldn't know it to hear that story!

I haven't locked my keys in the car for AT LEAST 20 years!

I can't lock the keys in my 69. I have to use them to lock the door.
On my '69 you lock the doors by depressing the lock knob then holding down the outside door button while closing the door.
Works like a charm, no key required, but it took me a while before I figured it out.

Hahaha! That's funny! I never would have figured that someone wouldn't know that...I guess I'm showing my age!

My company 06 Impala has standard remote start. Not only is it now a must have feature for any new car I buy going forward, but is a constant reminder of just how cars have changed in 20 years when starting while in the car could sometime be a challenge.

I had this happen with me a few years ago in a 68 std 2V, family in tow headed to a picnic. Was able to take the top off the carb with a dime, fix the float and soak up the fuel with my tee shirt. Back on the road in minutes! Got to love the simplicity of these cars sometimes...

Yea that's true! If I had the time (and a dime) I might have tried to pull the top off myself, but all I was wearing was a T-Shirt, that would have left me naked!

That works on the passenger side of my 69 Cat. On the left side you don't have to hold in the button as you close the door to lock it.

I guess I never tried the holding the button. I rarely lock it anyway. I live in base housing and park my car right outside the shop at work. I only lock it if I go in town.

Hey, they were dependable in their day. It's just getting older now. I finished doing a ground up restoration on the cuda a few years back, and now I drive it anywhere, anytime, without any hesitations or cell phone. Best part is, even if it were to break down it's easy to fix! The other thing is that most people don't drive them often enough. Letting a car sit around is the worse thing. I have some of mine stored in the summer when it's too hot and rainy to drive the convertibles and even then, I try to start them once a week. Sorry to hear about your mishap..

Not really a mishap, I just thought it was hilarious, one thing after another! ;)

Not only are they easy to fix, but the parts don't cost $800.00. Everything that breaks on my Windstar (or any other EFI vehicle that I've owned) costs $800.00.

Best to just go home crawl back into bed, pull the covers over your head and say to yourself "this was just not my day....tomorrow will be better" and go to sleep. The next day it will seem all that much funnier the more you think about it. I mean what the hey, it couldn't get any worst right?
