I am thinking just black, Might have had some gloss to it similar to rear axle housing?

? really? Mine actually seemed to have some cosmoline on them only on one side. That side was pretty black. Other side was old and dirty so I wasn't sure if there had been paint on them or not. Seems with all the natural parts on the car, no wonder they began to rust so fast. At least in Michigan.

Harvey, is it possible the black that is on the shackles is from when the dealer that you bought it from painted the underneath? John

Back when I bought mine - back when they were available at the local dealership - they were either natural or possibly phosphate/oil finish. That's going back almost 30 years ago, so my memory may not be what I thought it was... ;)

It is more than likely the black came from the dealer I bought it from. Not the Mercury dealer but the one that spray bombed everything to make it look like it was fresher than it was. No this car never was undercoated.
