I got a "soon to fail" water pump changed, the fuel tank sending unit has now been replaced and installed the new speedo cable assembly. My question is..there was a two section speedo cable setup. A short section coming off the head screwed onto a circular unit with a couple wires attached and then it was screwed onto the main cable lead. What is the electrical device for? It doesn't have cruise so I can't figure out what it would do.

Pat, in 1970 it was called the distributor modulator. There were also two similar systems on the 1972 Mercury Cougars. TRS Transmission Regulated Spark and ESC Electronic
Spark Control are the names of the two systems. The 1970 system is pictured.

That would be it. I have not disconnected it but it is out of the system as I installed the one piece speedometer cable. Will there be any significant impact from it being out of the system?
