It's time to tackle my power steering, which has play in the wheel. I was always under the impression that when this symptom occurs that it's usually related to the warn out ‘guts’ of the steering box, however, my mechanics inspection revealed that it's most likely the control valve and that we should replace that unit.

Anybody else had experience in this area?

Try working the wheel and see what is moving/not moving when the steering wheel is moved. Eric Overton has some online instructions on adjusting the gear box. See the link.

If you've alot of play in the steering, then yes, the most likely culprit is a worn out Powersteering control valve. The ball stud wears out and results in sloppy steering.

The control valves are still readily available as rebuilt units for about $120...

Eric's article mentioned above is an excellent resource and a must read.

I would say the play is a lot and the mechanic showed me what he found and was good enough to explain everything to me. He quoted me a similar price for a remanufactured part as well.

I read Eric’s article and it’s very informative. :D
