i am always curious to know what a group of people has in common that makes them a group. yeah, i know, we all have or at least love Classic Cougars. but why?

i've always thought (and so does Detroit) that there is something in us that attracts us to certain cars. that something is where my curiosity lies. could it go back to our first cars?

mine was a 69 VW Beetle. i never had a car in high school. they kept raising the age for a drivers license and i was never old enough to get one. but in 69 i was eighteen and had a job that didn't pay all that much. the Beetle was the perfect car for me.

and since i bought it new, i never had to learn how to work on it, leaving me today a total non-motorhead.

how about you guys?

This is always an entertaining topic... :)

My first car was a 74 Gran Torino - 4dr - 302... Bought it from the original owner.. It was a sweet car until one day I was racing my buddy and the tranny wouldn't shift from first and I ended up seizing the motor up going around 60mph in first gear... (I was young and stupid so shuddap)... I must say, the cloud of blue smoke was impressive though.

Next, moved on to a 74 Mustang II, 72 Chevelle, 73 Mustang Coupe, 91 Escort GT (Brand new, for 3 weeks until a punk broadsided me at 40mph), 92 Escort GT, 80 Chevy Citation(Flintstone special), 72 Firebird (400 big block, cool car), 86 Fiero V6, 98 Taurus, 99 F150 XLT, 69 Cougar, 99 SVT Lightning...

That should be all of em...

81 Mercury Capri RS

I loved my capri. I decked it out with beafier Mustang GT suspension, with Konies all the way around a 3.45 gear truck c4, of course a 302 with dual 4 barrels, ported windsor heads, and a mild cam. I had that car 0-60 in 5 seconds flat. It handled awsome to.

got to this link for pics

yumping yiminy, since you listed them all (and a note for Logan)...

first the note for Logan: the 69 Beetle lived two lives. I lived about 50 miles from DC and used to haul ass down the interstate, foot to the floor. Uphill, it'd get down to about 55, downhill, 85 or 90. The speed limit was 75 in those days (for about a month.) One day, I'm hauling downhill and - WHAM! - the oil light came on and the engine seized at the same time. The guy who changed the oil the day before hadn't tightened the drain bolt. Fried that little sucker good. I had it towed and abandoned it in my parent's driveway. My father put a new engine in it and used it for his business.

My cars and a couple bikes (as many as I can remember anyway...):
1965 Yamaha 250 (street bike)
1969 Beetle
(Shoe leather for two years)
1968 Cutlass (bought at auction)
1973 Cougar XR-7 Medium Aqua
1973 Lincoln Mark IV (black on black on black)
1973 Yamaha 500 (what a bike that was!)
1954 Chevy Sedan (totalled by a truck driver)
1965 Ford Galaxy (cost me $50 and didn't make it to Boston)
(More shoe leather for a while)
1971 PINTO! (Wife, girlfriend at that time, owned this death trap)
1954 Chevy 210 Handiman (wagon) Green
1954 Chevy 210 Handiman (wagon) ugly Brown (parts car)
1972 Ford F100 (junker)
1980 LeCar (love those death traps!)
1982 Dodge Ram (got at LEAST 2 miles to the gallon)
1982 Dodge 400 (not sure about the year)
1984 Dodge 600
1986 Ford Tempo (two wheel drive)
1988 Ford Tempo (all wheel drive - ran through universals like butter; my wife took out a twelve point buck with this one)
1990 Subaru Legacy (a freaking tank - just sold it last year)
1992 Ford Bronco
1993 Ford Taurus (baby **** green)
1993 Ford Festiva (yet another death trap)
1995 Subaru SVX (**** and git it!)
1995 Subaru Justy (what can I say?)
1997 Subaru Legacy
1999 Subaru Legacy Outback Wagon Anniversary Edition
2000 Ford Focus ZTX
2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
1973 Cougar XR-7 Medium Aqua

WHEW!

First car at 15 was a 65 Rambler Marlin. Anyone even know what one is? Came home from school one day and the Ole man had traded it off for a tractor. I was Hot!!!! It was okay he later chipped in and helped me get a 69 Torino GT M code, way cool !!! I guess I've owned around 45-50 cars and trucks. Heck I own 4 right now.

Tim B. I had one of those 86 Taurus 4cyl MT 5's. I never saw many 5 spds around. Probably the best car I ever owned. No it wasnt speedy, but mine useally got over 30mpg, ran down the interstate great and it wouldnt wear out. mm

Ohhh, man this bring back the memories...

Back in 1979, my first car was a Grabber Green 1970 Torino GT convertible w/429TJ original. Saved my paper route money --$2500-- and fell in love with in upon sight. I was looking at a Boss 351, but chose the Torino instead (I still own it!). I sometimes wonder  just how rare that Boss '1 was as it had power windows...

Others vehicles (in some sort of an order) were/are:
-1963 Corvair Greenbriar van (w/Spyder drivetrain)
-1963 Corvair Rampside P/U
-1968 Lincoln Continental 4dr Convertible
-1975 Fiat Spyder
-1974 Matador 4-door
-1966 Cheby Biscayne (can you say Tony Baretta?)
-1971 Torino GT convertible 429CJ (still have it, maybe someday it will be finished  )
-1975 Ford LTD Country Squire Wagon
-1969 Mach 1 428CJ/shaker
-1972 Volvo 164
-1970 Shelby Quarterhorse -- that is, a prototype Shelby with a Boss '9 drivetrain; one of two made (I was half owner, boy were we stooopid to sell that one :bloated: :puke:; no money to put it together tho' and it was only a rolling chassis)
-1979 Capri w/'66289 Hipo and lots of N2O (made lots of dough with that one!)
-1980 Caddy Coupe DeVille
-1971 Torino Squire Wagon w/351C-4V & AC original
-1963 Sunbeam Tiger w/260-4V (a rotten out hulk but still way fun)
-1987 Audi 5000Ti Quattro
-1992 Explorer XLT
-1993 F350 Crew Cab 4x4
-1994 Mark VIII (company car, does that count?)
-1995 Mark VIII LSC (a great car!)
-1996 Crown Victoria w/Police option (company car)
-1970 Torino GT convertible w/351C-4V/4 speed/shaker (another car I have just got to finish...)
-1998 Lotus Elise (company car; wife misses it more than I -- really too small for a 6'3" 250# guy, but great for a petite Thai/Chinese)
-1997 Proton Perdana (also company car)
-1997 Lotus GT3 (was company car but I bought it & still have it)
-1971 Cougar 429CJ (still have this, of course)
-1998 Lincoln Continental (current daily driver)
-1986 Dodge 600 convertible (wife's beater + our big black dog loves it; she just got her license so I don't care if she wrecks it)

Man, I didn't think I owned that many cars! Thanks for the memories...

Cheers,
Dan

I remember the Marlin. It was a big fastback, like the 66-67 Chargers. I see them around once in great awhile.

The Taurus MT-5 was not exactly quick, I thought of it as a aero Volvo :). Once I tried out a SHO I had to get one.

They are all on my web page, click on the SHO and it'll show all my old Fords.
