I guess I should be happy that anybody writes anything about Cougars, but.............

A 1967-70 Cougar is a good investment. It was a high-revving 302-cubic-inch V-8 with two four-barrel carburetors and was identical to the engine used in Trans Am racing by the Mustang Boss 302 model. Conservatively rated at 290 horsepower, this snarling motor really generated at least 350 horsepower. A big, optional 428-cubic-inch V-8 with 335 horsepower was more docile.

2 4bbls?!!!! 350HP? 428 was more docile? LOL

Looks like you bought the wrong Cougar as an investment and are as upside down as me.

hmmm that was from Nadaguides.com for classic car values. actually that seems a little high seeing as the Barret Jackson car sold for about that earlier this year, but hey, who am i to judge?

just for info... i also ran a 69 428 R Code Vert and its value came up as $28,000. i used errr someones car here as an example for it. guess who? lol. personally that seems a little low. well, at least they didnt say $9,700

28K was what I got for my car too. But it's gone up quite a bit since I bought it. It was $23,000 a year or so ago. I also think the CJ convertibles are showing a little low compared to CJ Eliminators.

I wrote to the guy who scribed the article:

While I appreciate any article on Cougars (Thank You!!!!!) I feel I need to point out a couple of errors.

No "two four barrels carburators" from the factory on Boss 302 Cougars, or Mustangs for that matter. And the 428CJ (Cobra Jet) was under rated at 335 NHRA rated it at 370. Quarter mile numbers don't lie, the 428CJ would do consistent 13.5/14.0 stock while the Boss 302 was high14s low 15s.

As for prices, I don't consult the NADA guid (sic), but rather the one used by top

Absolutely! A 4 bbl "street" version, the dual quads were race only, perhaps over the counter from Ford. None were from the factory. The Boss 302 is a G code. There is only one version from the factory. Nor did Mercury campaign Cougars in Trans Am in 69/70.

The CPI is usually low, NADA tends toward the high side. Buyers (and brokers) like to quote CPI sellers like NADA naturally! But believe me, Boss 302 and 428CJ Cougars are few and far between and the sellers know that ;-) There were two Cougars of interest at Jackson-Barrett in January. A 69 428CJ Eliminator that I'd seen at the Cougar Nationals last July, it sold for $37.8K and a 70 XR-7 428CJ convertible sold for $48.5K. Yeah I know J-B is over inflated and a circus atmosphere, but it does bode well for the future. Even before that nicely restored examples were selling for $25-$32K. I know a board member of NADA and he's also a Cougar collector who takes personal interest in the values and we dutifully report them.

As Cougar owners, we've all been under the Mustang shadow for years. Some have been cannibalized for Mustangs......nothing gets a Cougar owner more angry! LOL It's nice to finally get some recognition. As my homepage below says: "MORE THAN A MUSTANG!" (BTW I've owned two Mustangs in the past!)

Just like in court it a matter of whose "experts" you use! I didn't even tell him about the GT-E that needed a restoration that sold for 20+K. I would have had to explain the whole GT-E 427/428CJ thing, and it was probably too much for non-Cougar writer. I've never read a automotive book that didn't have errors("respected" authors or not!!!!), he mistook the 2 4bbl comment altogether anyway.
