You won't need that much luck if you have one of these.... the Bible of the 69 Cougar.Hi all, on Saturday I picked up my new baby 69 with a 351w/c6 needs lots of work but i'm up for the challenge to bring her back to life. I've gone through lots of posts, and I already would like to thank the many users on this forum for sharing their experience and knowledge.
Top priority to do list:
1. figure out wiring. Alternator is remanufactured, new battery, new starter regulator. but the alternator isn't kicking in.
2. Gauges. the only thing working at the moment is the alternator light is on. everything else is not operable.
3. install the 4barrel carb that is in the trunk.
Wish me luck

Not sure what a starter regulator means. There is a voltage regulator, and there is a starter solenoid. I'm not aware of anything called a starter regulator. The alternator output charges the battery through its connection at the positive battery terminal of the starter solenoid, but the amount of charge being generated comes from the voltage regulator. My best guess is one of the two is mis-wired. Getting the service manual will help you figure out the correct wiring. Is the alternator case and the base of the voltage regulator grounded properly? Please keep us updated.Hi all, on Saturday I picked up my new baby 69 with a 351w/c6 needs lots of work but i'm up for the challenge to bring her back to life. for the gauges there is a 5 volt voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster. That is shown how to test, access and replace in the service manual. However your other idiot lights should also work as they do not use the voltage regulator. Not sure how to make any progress without some more details, for example do the turn signal lights work? Do the dash lights come on when the headlights are on? Is your car an XR7 or standard Cougar?Hi all, on Saturday I picked up my new baby 69 with a 351w/c6 needs lots of work but i'm up for the challenge to bring her back to life. the part in your picture is the starter solenoid. the other one not pictured should be the voltage regulator
thanks man, that helps. My quick test to see if the alternator is working is to have a good voltmeter and check the battery before starting; it is usually about 12.5 volts or so. Start the car, and it should go up significantly, to maybe 14 volts. If it does not change or starts dropping, you are not charging. If you have a lot of electrical gremlins, then you should buy a decent voltmeter and maybe a test light. They help a lot. Dirty connections can be a problem so watch for that.
