Thanks for posting. A really unique Mercury prototype from the days when what a car looked like and what differentiated it from its competition was important.

I wonder what the Mercury brand would be like today if this went into production instead of the Thunderbird?
Most concept cars were never ment for production, they were used to test public reaction to various features that were intended for production. At best a limited number of features would be introduced on future cars - i.e. the ribbed chrome band that crossed the back of the roof - appeard on the 55-56 mercury pheatons - similarly the headlights are an exagerated version of the production 55-6 Mercurys and 56-7 Lincolns

It wasn't unusual to display cars actually slated for production with concept cars. also thought the 50's the public was very accpeting of "futuristic" features, espcially aircraft inspiration.
