First, I would like to say thanks for all of the help that I have been getting from this post. THANKS! Now, at the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, is there a difference in 460s based on the year they came out? Specifically, is there a year I should be looking for to get the best performance/durability? What cars did they come stock in?

Not a stupid question at all!!

Originally the higher compression 460s came in Lincolns starting in 1968 1/2 Mark IIIs. They were standard in all 69 Lincolns. They were somewhat detuned in 1971, but they still required premium fuel and had the same horse power rating.

By the mid 70s Ford was using the 460 in a lot of cars (Torino(optional), LTD, Elite, Thunderbird (standard), Lincoln (still standard) but it was a smogged low compression engine. But it did use unleaded! I'm sure they can be built up, and still use our current crappy fuel.

I'll post a couple of pics of my 71 Mark III in the photos section.
