Big turn-out last night at Englishtown's Raceway Park, only got three runs in (and plenty of inconsistency!). Had a HD 720P Wide Angle Lense Key Fob camera on the dash for in-car video and a buddy manning my HD video camera in the stands. First two runs with exhaust cutouts open, corked them up for the third and final. Enjoy, I know I did!

Same run, from the stands:

Next run I dropped the clutch at a much lower RPM, less spin, better time but still short of my high 13's goal. Check out the scale weight, 4025 lbs!:

<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allownetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf" flashvars="file=http%3A%2F%2Fvid1194.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa367%2FECIBob%2FShows%2F2013%2FE-Town%2520Drags%2520092513%2FMINI0038_zps2ccc3e17.mp4" height="361" width="600">

From the stands. Car sorta SOUNDS like a Cougar (the animal), doesn't it?:

<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allownetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf" flashvars="file=http%3A%2F%2Fvid1194.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa367%2FECIBob%2FShows%2F2013%2FE-Town%2520Drags%2520092513%2F00002_zps1a99a1f5.mp4" height="361" width="600">

Last run, with the exhaust. Nearly the same time (14.3x) as my second run and about 1 MPH higher (99.x), exhaust is working well I guess!:

My buddy got a little whacked out with the zoom!:

Decided that I am going to change out the cam (XE262) to the XE274, with the 3.89 gears I just ordered should work well. Tired of trying to control detonation with fuel and probably not reaching the engine's potential. Need more overlap to bleed some of the true 10:1 off at low RPM's.

Very cool videos!

Sounds great.

Good luck getting it to hook up better! I bet the right slicks will do it.

I love the race commentary before your race "Mustang and Astro Van", when the guy says "that's a popular race vehicle" :)

looks like fun Bob! She leaves pretty smooth as far as weight transfer goes - that's the first hurdle to cross with the cat's. I bet you could stick some cheater slicks on and gain quite a bit of bite. How do you like the new trans? I would think you could get into the mid 13's with not to much tweaking though? Think she's falling flat on the low end torque wise? 3.89 gears alone should get you there - kinda wonder how you would like them on the street though...? Are you running any special fuel/additives? Might be able to tweak the advance to get the detonation under control still......how about one of these? http://www.texas-speed.com/p-2381-msd-adjustable-timing-control.aspx?gclid=CNGrzqzJ67kCFcbm7AodiHAAGQ

Yeah, the guy's a piece of work! He remembers Isabel and tells his recollection (different every time) of her story each time I go. He happened to be doing tech inspection the first time I took her to race in May, 2012.

Funny how no one remembers any hurricane but Sandy around here...

Time Slips (Car #203):

Actually, I think some from one or both of last years outings show better driving but not sure where those have gotten to!

Mike,

Love the new trans and it is why I can do the 3.89 and like it on the street. They will have me turning around 2500 RPM at 80 MPH but give me nice gearing for hard launching and make 5th more useable around town.

On the detonation, it is the 10:1 combined with a low overlap cam (called for with 3.25 gears). Now with the 3.89, the XE274 will be the shizzle and the DCR number calculates as 8.1, borderline as compared to 8.43 which I have now which is far over the limit for pump fuel.

And no, I don't like the thought of having to use additives and doubt their ability to help the situation.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

When I ran my four speed Nova I use to shift out of 1st quite similar as you for years(street racing). I was the only guy running a 4 gear at the time. Cars would leave hard on me but I would catch them! One day while at the drag strip I watched a younger fella row a stick Mustang thru the gears(and the boy could shift). I watch as he banged out of 1st a lot sooner than I and it worked great. I tried this technique and found the Ol'Nova loved it, and opponents weren't getting out on me as much. I know all cars are set up different but its worth a try for a quicker time!

Thanks Dan. Now, are you saying to short shift 1st, i.e. get into second sooner?

Exactly Bob...it took a little to get use to because of the way I normally shifted, but in the end it worked out! I should have spoke to the fella I seen do this for a little info on his power train setup but I just tried it out for the hellavit!

Bring on "The Fuglies"!

Bring on "The Fuglies"! This oughta help at the track. Nitto NT555R 275/40-17 Extreme Drag Radials on the cheapest 17 x 9 steelies (with the right backspacing) I could find, kinda truck "wagon wheel-ish". $78 each from Summit and free shipping. They look primer grey in the picture but are actually metallic silver. Mounted them myself last night using a cheap HF tire iron I picked up a while back on a whim (must have been cheap, they are on sale for $4.99 right now).

Tried one on the car, they fit nicely - as nice as my street rims/tires. 0.25" less backspace in the rim and slightly narrower tire than my street setup (285/40-17).

Also, here is a custom shift knob (with Ford licensing) I had made up. Tried to coordinate with the paint color of the car. Perhaps I should have gone with black pearl or straight black (like a free knob I got with the trans purchase that has a "TREMEC" embedment in it). Will try it out and see if it is "me". Kind of expensive at just under $60 but since I am spoiled I figured why not.

So, when are you going to try out those tires?

Make sure to post back your times, I am really curious to see how they work out.

Good luck!

Who can tell what tires are the best for such runs? I do not think that plain street tires are a good choice. What do you think? Are street tires really applicable to such activities? I believe you should use something more specialized. I am from https://populationstat.com/france/ and we do not have anything like this in my neighborhood. So I wanted to organize some fun here.
