Just forward of the door hinges is a vertical seam (green arrows in pic), and this seam is covered with black stuff that is hardened and chipping off.

I can't tell if this is P.O. shenanigans, or if it came from the factory that way. If it's supposed to be that way, what do I replace it with? Is it necessary/desirable to replace it?

Also, around the engine bay where the fender mounts, there is a thick filler material (about 1/16 inch, more in some spots). Looks like it may fix up some ragged sheet metal joints. Again, is this the way the factory did it? What do I replace it with?

I know these are really basic auto body questions, and I appreciate any help.

Is that the stuff that is wraped around my expantion valve?
Think so, I used it on my expansion valve as well when I put the AC stuff together.

Any reason you wouldn't use seam sealer to replace the tape? Also it looks like the car was Lime Frost Poly, as is mine. Are you going to original or changing the color?
