I have a 68 XR-7 with the j-code 302.Located on the inside drivers fender is a "Stinger Mark 10b" capacitive discharge ignition box.The box is gold anodized finned aluminum.
I'm sure this is not a factory part.It looks very old and I was wondering if it can be retrofit with a MSD.

The Stinger is a capacitive discharge system available from around 1974 - 1982 and was made by Hays. It was state of the art when introduced and does much the same thing as an MSD which is to increase primary coil voltage which in turn boosts coil output. It also lessens current across the points so the points last almost indefinitely.

The MSD units have a multiple spark at low RPM's to increase combustion efficiency. Some versions have a rev limiter (MSD 6AL for example).

You did not say if you also hve a Hays Stinger distributor or distributor conversion module. These can be used to trigger an MSD box, you would just have to replace the connector with something to plug into the MSD trigger circuit.

So the short answer is yes.
