Okay I know we have covered all this before, but need some clarification.
I was chatting to a guy today who owns a workshop that specialises in V8's, he had a look at Ruby's engine and said that I need a bigger airfilter, mine is not 'high' enough, he suggested a K&N filter that is tapers like a cone at the bottom, apparently it can fit on my holley, or something like that, he also said that I should ditch the 5 blade fan and get two electric fans, apparently this will add 60-80 hp, any truth in that? I am sceptical, having heard many stories of how to get more hp, not that I am really looking for more hp, but anyway. BTW Radiator is apparently a 4 row one?
Here's a pic of the fan.

That's an air cleaner, not a fan. Ha ha, bet cha didn't think I could tell the difference....lol....Seriously, a taller air filter wouldn't hurt."60 to 80 hp", don't think so, more like 10 to 15. "don't fix what aint broke"....

While relieving the drain on the motor by putting an electric fan. I seriously doubt the HP claim the this guy makes.... the air filter may be a different story however .. It MIGHT make the cat breath better but again I doubt you will feel any difference.. Does this guy sell electric fans and K&N air filters?? IMHO .... Save your money

Yeah, I thought that might be the case, sorry about the fan'air filter thing, its 3.45AM, my brain is arely awake, in fact I think I am going to sleep now, before I completely ruin my reputation as being so knowledgable on engine parts, lol. BTW he also said that my bent axle shaft would severely hamper my steering and cause major problems, well yes, it will wear my tyre out, but I seem to remember you guys saying it would not really affect the steering much, and another BTW there is absolutely no uneven wearing out on the tyre on the bent shaft, totally even. Maybe I have not been driving her enough :)

Sorry one more BTW, he did offer to get the K&N and fans for me, told him it was okay, I had my own contacts, he looked a bit put out by that. I just object to buying a filter that will ...quote.."leave me with little change from R1000"....unquote.

Dayle, I filter that tapers to a cone on the bottom wont fit your car. If you do get a new filter, do get a K&N one though, just a standard size K&N will be a big improvement over the stock paper one. They are re-useable as well, just wash and re-oil and good to go. On dual electric fans, guy just wanted to sell you something to make money. If it doesnt overheat, leave the stock fan, they work ok. Electric fans will give more hp, but not 80, more like maybe 15, but for R1000 not worth it is it. :D

like was stated the best you could hope for is 15 in reality it is closer to 10 or less. if you dont like the k&N accel now makes filters and so do a couple other companies like the K&N but the cone wont fit and your filter looks fine. anyways if you arent drag racing a couple of HP means very little. if it aint broke dont fix it.

Thanks guys, I finally got to sleep, at about 5am, no one in their right mind would have liked to see what I looked like when I woke up, hell, felt like it as well. The cars temp stays down, moves but never really goes much above 1/4 to 1/2 way, which is slightly odd cos' I get a heat shimmer when I look at the bonnet, wondering if it is accurate, I have a deep mistrust of old gauges.
If the guy thought he was impressing me with 60 - 80hp increase he was sadly mistaken, much as I would like a mean street machine one day, I am quite happy with what she does now, if I were to go the hp route I think I would start with getting 4V heads and take it from there. From the electric fan point of view, if I could get a good one, for a reasonable price I would not mind putting it on, not for the hp [.........really] but cos' I have had hassles with the stock fans on quite a few of my cars, it would be mostly for convenience and reliability. When my air filter finally needs replacing I will get a higher one, maybe not the best money can buy but the best I can buy, that wire frame that goes round it can easily be made, and I guess I would need a longer bolt.
How do the fans on the cougars work, on our Sierra V6 the fan had a viscous coupling between the fan and the pulley, controlled by a bimetallic spring, which eventually packed up, we then bolted it on to the water pump pulley, or was it the alternator pulley, or are they the same pulley, I forget, but anyway, is the cougars fan engine driven or temperature driven? And why has mine got 5 blades, instead of 4.

dayle - if you want to get more air through the filter there is a taller element that fits in your air cleaner. You will need to check to see if it will fit under the hood and you will need to get the longer screw that fits into the carb

Thanks Leon, thats what I think I am going to do, when the filter needs replacing, I have not actually looked to see what type it is, could be a GUD or something along those lines. Which means it cost about $9.00, AUS$ 15 or so.
