I have been wrestling with this thing for over an hour. It's a '68 XR7 automatic. I removed the screws. The unit seems to move freely but something around the shifter seems to still be connected.
There is a round white plastic rod that goes from the shifter arm to the moving shift light mechanism on the console. Careful not to break it, you need to pinch the end to release it from the shifter.
Thanks CJ. That white plastic connector was not the culprit, but I did eventually figure it out. BTW, that rod was actually already broken. Didn't need my help. lol
