I am in the process of building a beam to use to hoist out an engine(351) and transmission(fmx) out of a car and reinstalling a 351/4 sp in its place. The span is 12 feet across and my beam can go up to 10 feet high if necessary. I have an engine hoist to use for this beam. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I spanned my garage wall to wall with two beams 24' wide (one in front and one in back) and mounted a beam trolly so I can pull the motor out of one car and installit in another if I want without moving cars around. They also work great to use straps to pull a camper shell of a truck... or a bed but I haven't done that yet.

For clearance purposes, anyone have a suggestion how tall the beam should be from the floor?

I would go to 10 feet with the I-beams, I put one in my polebarn, I've got 8ft should have went with 10 the extra room would have been nice. For the little extra it cost's it will be worth it
