The Cat was pinging under load, even though I thought I had the timing down. Started to redo the timing, removed the rubber hole to the vacuum advance, and found a big ol' HOLE in the freakin' hose! Think that might be it?

Dunno about that, I have the same type pinging noise, hose is fine, someone told me it was the gas exploding round the engine/heads [was'nt really listening] from blown gasket. Any thoughts on that one.

Just had this answer to my query about pinging noise, guess I should re check the vacumn advance.

3. Sounds like pinging. Possible causes are engine running too hot, the timing could be off (vacuum advance could be culprit here if base timing is good), using too low octane gas, deposits in cyliders causing detonation. Probably are other cases but these are the ones I've had do this to me. Get the temps down and this typically goes away.
