The other day I went to start up the cat and the gas gauge read empty. I got out to check for leaks, but there was nothing dripping. I knew I had at least half a tank, and went to work. Later that day, I started her up again and it read fine. For the past few days it has been very sporradic as far as when it will read properly is concerned. It was working fine for most of today, but is there anything I can do to fix it? Is it the unit, or maybe the wiring is loose?

Gas guage

Remove the wire that is plugged onto the sending unit on the tank. With the key on, ground that wire, and if the tank reads full the problem is with the sending unit. It is probably getting rusty, a common problem.
