My fuel sending unit was not working so installed a new one. Now when I fill the tank up full the guage only shows 3/4 full. Any ideas what I did wrong and how to correct?

Mine did the same thing when I put a new tank and sending unit in. I had a bad connection at the back of the guage cluster.

Mine does the same thing, provided I don't top off the tank. When I top off the tank, it reads full. Even reading between 3/4 and full when I fill it, the needle is pretty much accurate after 50 miles.

I've heard that using a Mustang sender will only show 3/4 full when you fill the tank. Don't know whether that's true or not.

Mine had started doing that after about a year after installing it :realshk:
So I checked all the wires and it turned out to be the one in the trunk, the conection was pretty dirty and now it works fine!
Btw mine is a mustang part, if I recall correctly the light for the low fuel just doesn't come on.
Mine's a 69 XR7 so not sure of the differences

A dirty connection will cause lower readings. The gauge uses 10 ohms for full and 73 ohms for empty. If the connections are dirty/corroded then you will have higher resistance resulting in a lower reading on the gauge.

How many connections, and their locations, do I need to check on a 68? Is there one in the trunk? I am not a tech head so make this easy for me.

Me too

I never worried about it that much, but my tank never reads more than a quarter tank when full and moves to empty at about half a tank. This is my second new sender and the tank is new. With the sender wire grounded and opened the guage will fully sweep. I would think this would eliminate guage or wiring problems. A couple of others in the club have the same issues. A friend told me a bad sender ground can cause this problem and that adding a ground wire from the chassis to the sender can fix this. I never tried it to see if it would, but it might be something easy to try.

The gauges aren't exact from what I have seen in my battle . There is a tool from DesertValleyparts that will generate the appropriate ohms at 1/4, 1/2, etc. It is $30. There is a Youtube video on how it works. I used it to eliminate the gauge and the wiring from the tank. I think one of my other posts, I listed the ohm settings it put out.

Hi, I am having a different problem with my fuels sending unit, I have verified that the wiring, gauge and the unit seem to operating properly, I think the issue is either the float is bad (I bought new and replaced it with the sock) or the float came off the sending unit, which I think is more likely the case. I was considering coming up with another way to fastening the float to the sender arm, but I am not sure what I can use that won't corroded or cause problems with the gas in the tank. Have any of you run across the issue and if so, how did you resolve it? Thank you.

The new reproduction senders are poorly made and often have a host of problems. If you saved the original unit it can be repaired and the cost will be less than the reproduction. Send it to bill at Desert Classics for repair.Desert Classic Auto Parts
