Can anybody explain or show a link to explain the various date code stamps and symbols that were used to show a service block versus a production block on an FE (specifically a 427 SO)?

I've seen a couple pics lately, and have seen both an O with two dots above it, and another with an I or and l with two dots above it. Are these both service blocks? What is the difference between the two?

They don't seem to have a 7 or 8 for the year as the first digit. They have this weirdness with the dots, and I seem to remember service block talk but can't remember the whole story..

Royce? Jim? Anybody?

Thanks!

The 0 and 1 were service blocks which were re cast in 19 70 and 71
The dots were to show what decade they cast in

mmeat,

towcat has it right. First digit with two dots under or over means "the 70's". Ford did NOT use "I" in their month digit (alpha character) so that it did not get confused with a one.

I don't believe that the 427 blocks were still being cast in 1980.....
