The directions that came with my new Crane roller cam said to clean it with mineral spirits or a similar solvent. Where do you get mineral spirits? Or better yet what have you used to clean a cam with before installation?

mineral spirits is just a mild solvent, you can probably find at any hardware or paint store, even wal-mart and places like that.
I will be taking mine out and reinstalling with new bearings shortly, I wonder what they put on a new cam that they want you to get off before installing?

The cam companies put a heavy grease like substance on there cams so they dont rust. Who know's, it was probably on the shelf for 2 years, or 2 minutes. They dont want a return on it, so they goop it up with grease. Any solvent will work, just dont use a fuzzy cloth to wipe the lobes off.

It's almost like the stuff they put on new brake rotors and other parts. I used a lot of it when I was in the NAVY. We called it grade 4.
