Why do 83-88 Mercury Cougars look a lot Like 85-91 Pontiac Grand Am's? or is it just me.

even the Mexican Ford Cougars 4 door looks kind of similar to a 4 door 89 grand am just a longer nose..

With such an abrupt drop off at the back window, I see that being a character line that's similar but to go further, I'm thinking not really.
No more similar to the 83-88 Cougar and t-bird of those days than the Monte Carlos and Buick Regals of the mid-late 80's. I think those were referred to as the G-Body series for GM.
