What do the original wheels look like for the 1972 XR-7? The ones I have on my car are Fairlane or Torino wheels.

Wheel options for 72 & 73

Short answer... There were none. The only wheels for our Cats was 14x6" black painted steel wheels. Plain old regular wheels.

If you had a Standard, you got the pie plate wheel covers with the blue cat centers. If you had an XR-7, you get the 'deluxe' XR-7 wheel covers. There were no factory styled wheels for our later Cats.

My 'BetaCat' is wearing a set of 14x6" painted Magnum 500s with brushed stainless trim rings that came from a Maverick or Granada (I can't remember which any more!). I have another set of the 14x7" painted Magnums that I was going to put on AlphaCat, but I probably won't be going that route any more.

I dont think many people ride on the original wheels because they dont really flatter the car. i'm thinking of five spoke cragar's when i get some serious money.hehe:rolleyes: those hupcaps look like dog dishes:D yikes:p:

Trim rings

I saw a pair of NOS trim rings on ebay this morning. Just check out the category 'Cars, Trucks, Parts', then the subcategory 'Parts, Car & Truck'. When that window comes up you'll see a small box to further refine your search. Type in 'Cougar' and you'll get about twenty pages of auction items for Cougars.

The direct link to the trim rings is -

Good luck and happy bidding!

Those looked like the ones! I was too late, though. Thank you, anyway!:(

wheelcovers?

Shouldn't your cat have full wheelcovers originally? I think it would be wire wheel covers or the regular XR-7 wheel covers. Where are you? There are used wheel cover stores around, there's a hubcap search page for Hemmings under parts.

Also check locally, there are two places in San Diego: Hub Cap Haven (heaven?) and Hub Cap Annie's.

Wheels

I have no idea what they should look like. I was told I have torino wheels. Two of my wheels got damaged and I waited 9 months for used ones...I'm in North Carolina.

Judy...

Here's a photo of the "deluxe" wheel covers. This is from my 73, but 72 was the same.

Thank you, Chas

I am going to e-mail you a picture of what my wheels look like. I have already e-mailed Cougrrcj a picture. I don't know how to put it in the forum thread.

WHEELS! WHEELS! WHEELS!

I do like the XR-7 wheel covers a lot! But, I want to make sure they are 72 before I bid on them!

Here are three 1972 Cougar XR-7s listed in the Auto Trader with the full wheel covers. That's pretty good proof, as it's unlikely that so many people would switch to the "wrong" wheel cover. Do you have the factory brochure or the owner's manual?

About the 3 (72's)

The first Cougar shown is a '71, I believe. (has no bumper guards and has a full vinyl top or was that an option?)....The third Cougar has a hood ornament??!!

Tim

That one also has no bumper guards. That is a new subject. Was that an option in 72? Or are mine wrong?

Wheels...again.

So the right wheel covers are the ones on e-bay with the XR-7 red center? Is that with 14x7 wheels?

71 or 72????????

Cougar Kitty,

I went back and looked at the photos and now I am confused! Doesn't a 71 have a ROUND grill emblem and a 72 has a RECTANGULAR grill emblem? From all the Autotrader photos I looked at it appears to be the reverse. Even then the photos are not consistent!

As for the bumper guards they were a very common option. The full vinyl top was an option over and above the quarter vinyl top. The hood ornament was added by the owner or the dealer, it was not a factory item.
