New guy here.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
I have a '73 XR7 Convertible (converted front bumper/grill to '71) that I've managed to hold on to since high school. It was originally a Florida car.
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
It's nothing fancy right now.<o:p></o:p>
351C H code (4 barrel for now)<o:p></o:p>
C-6 FMX
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
I have a standalone EMS (Accel DFI Gen7), Weiand single plane intake (set up for port fuel injection), billet throttle body, 60lb/hr injectors and a mess of Aeromotive EFI parts waiting to go on the car.
<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
I am currently looking for some 2v factory exhaust manifolds to help mock up the single turbo setup. After that, I may go with a set of Sanderson 351c shorty headers if it looks like the exhaust manifolds will work when pointing the wrong direction.

73 XR-7 Convert here

This is the 2nd. Lost the 1st in 2000 due to a financial TMI meltdown problem, had her for over 10+ yrs. Found the 2nd in NC just this year. Just starting to get this one back functioning and the build numbers were very close between the two out of the Dearborn Assembly plant. [sisters????? ;)]

Appreciate any help others on this board can provide for the XR-7 Convertible.

Color - 6f
Engine: 351C-2v
Trans: FMX - not C-6

Interior - Ginger - (some seat split problems - especially the drivers door panel. Common XR-7 problem.)

Electrical - same as the 1st - gas gauge, most warning stuff; head lights on, key in, seat lock, etc... All fuses are ok and relays above glovebox seem to be ok, any tests you know of to correct??. I think a wiring problem but have no clue how to ID or fix.

Mechanically - she is sound, just some minor problems with the PS pump and a engine rear seal, leaking very marginally. Can't think of any other major mechanical that hasn't been checked or replaced other rebuilding the engine to correct the rear seal leak.

Dumb stuff - how do we keep that console clock working? Also, the radio, great AF/FM but the slidered doesn't move. Can tune the channels but the slider doesn't move. I'm hoping that the dial belt broke rather than the dial gears are stripped.

My 1st post here, just to ask the community about 1973 Cat questions.

72 XR7 Convertible

Relative new guy here. Just bought a '72 XR7 Convertible in Dallas. It's dark blue metallic with blue interior and blue convertible top. It's in really good condition and needs minimal effort to freshen it up! Haven't yet investigated whether the drivetrain is a W or C yet. Will post pics and avatar shortly.

Post the data from your car's driver door tag and buck tag (held by screw to radiator support behind right headlight) and we'll tell you more about your car!

BTW, Clevelands have 8 valve cover bolts, and Windsors have six. Never seen a factory W in a 71-73 Cat though...

Curious About Price

I have a 69 and 70, but was curious what the 71-73 gang thought about this price for a 73 vert. Is $5500 too much? I know it is up to who is willing to pay this amount, but just curious what you guys thought.

76F 3B DQ X 2 84

White Power Top, Tilt Steering Wheel, Power Window and seat. All original and it shows.
Thanks,
Dean

I don't think a 351 W was available in '72. It is a 351 C.

Dean,
sorry for the delay in responding to your post.
$5,500 seem to be a really great price. Car looks great with the typical exceptions of the seats (driver) and dash cap splits. You have the white leather and they're easy to replace from Johns Classic Cougar or West Coast Cougar for under a grand. I've got those darn Ginger ones and they seem to be more costly for door panels and seats - go figure.
To my knowledge - XR-7 73's, at least the convertibles, were built with a 351C-2V standard, all 3166 of them. Regular 73 cats, body models 65D and 76D (convert version) may or may not have a 351C, a mish mash. If you have a 76F I believe you have a 351C sitting under the hood. Check the VIN, is it a 'H' or 'Q' code? H means - 2v while Q - means 4v
Total 73 Cougars built: 60629

By body style:
65D - 21069

65F - 35110

76D - 1284

76F - 3166

Rag top you have seems to have glass, thats a major ++. Hint, lower all windows a bit before you try to re-seat the top after she has been down for a while so you get a good fit and don't bust the glass.
Nice purchase - she looks great for the price!

Vkingbb,
Thanks for the follow up. I know prices are very subjective. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't totally out of my mind.:sun:

'72 pop top
351C 2V
True color code 4F~medium metal flake green.
California desert car true mileage unknown.
Four (4) layers of paint and four layers primer
just stripped from it. the right rear quarter had
only 2sq inches of surface rust and the rust in
trunk in my other pics is total of any cancer. I
lifted all carpeting & the floor pans and rocker
panels have zero rust, the under carriage looks
desert dry and clean.

of course being painted back to original code.

I need most of an interior, front & rear seats,
door panels, rear panels, console clock.

please let me know what you have or any leads.

got some paint on the car finally in my first real step of restoring this '72 pop top. the paint job isn't really that good (too much orange peel) but was better than the faded blue incorrect color before. these cats don't trade for much jing usually unless they're XR7s and mint ones at that so I'll not be spending big bucks for perfection I just want to get it clean, tight and fast enough to get it to where I'm happy.

98% rust free california car had a little bondo in the two spots above and only two dime sized spots (one on each side) in the rear quarters.

Back to the original medium lime green w/metal flake, in this picture the car hadn't even had a final rub out yet, then we sealed and waxed with Gliptone. Gliptone (<--the wax was always this color) had always been and still is the finest carnuba wax money can buy, I've been using it since the 60s when you had to pick it up @ local car shows, mail order, or go to the one or two auto parts stores in the Dobbs Ferry NY area that carried it. I'm not sure when DuPont bought out the product but they've kept the formula exactly the same over the years, excellent.

my car needs a new top but I don't want to bother keeping a white ragtop immaculate so I'm opting to throw on a saddle colored top, seats (I need a fresh interior anyway), saddle door panels & ginger carpeting; the black dashboard & console I'll have to deal with as is.
