Seems a bit difficult shifting into reverse and 1st; had entire clutch system replaced 2010, about 20K ago. Not sure whats up, but in spring 2023, if clutch system needs replacing,
considering swapping out original shifter for a Hurst basic 3 speed. Forgot much of the install, I'm 75.
Q: Does the Hurst go straight down into the tranny at the console?
Is that reasonable thing to do.?
Though stock in most all respects , not concerned about upgrading to a Hurst shifter, I got original period Cragers, and upgraded to dual exhaust, and swapped manual steering to PS from a Mustang.
thanks

It's been many moons since I messed with a mustang shifter, but I remember it having a couple of steel bars that went from the shifter assembly to the side of the transmission, not a shifter that is feeding into the top of the tranny like the later model cars tend to have. There are adjustments that you can make to it; probably that's all it needs. A new Hurst shifter would only fix it in the sense that when you put it in you would have to adjust it a lot to get it mated up properly. It could also be that your clutch is not quite disengaging, which will make it hard to get into gear when you are not moving.

Sounds like the clutch linkage is sticking/binding/bending or out of adjustment. I would start there.
