It's my understanding that originally Ford said the 428CJ's oil capacity was 4 quarts +1 (for the filter)=5. (SCJ +1=6 for the oil cooler)

Then there was a TSB in 1970 raising it to 5+1=6 (SCJ+1=7) with a new recalibrated dip stick. Not all 1969 428CJs necessarily got the new dip stick.

Does a trans cooler affect this? (I assume not) I'm putting in 6 quarts with a new oil filter and it reads over FULL.

I sure don't want to under oil it, can I put in too much?

TSB

Tim,

The TSB says to:
1. Drain the oil and reinstall the plug.
2. Install a new oil filter.
3. Pour in 6 quarts of oil(CJ) or 7 quarts (SCJ).
4. Start the engine and bring up to operating temperature.
5. Shut off the engine and wait one hour.
6. Using a small file make a new full level mark on the dipstick

Thanks Royce,

I was confused when I saw this on the Mustang Cobra Jet Registry:

Re: oil capacity

Here is some info for you on the 428cj & 428 scj...According to this it's 7 quarts for boss 302 and 428Cj plus an extra quart for oil cooler equiped cars.........

I read that too. It is a typo, I am sure Allen meant six in his original post.
