Hey everybody,
so upon putting the carb back on my '69 Cougar I realized I don't know where this vacuum line hooks up. Notice the dark tube coming out of the carb just above the choke housing? Mine has a short section of rubber tubing and then a long piece of bent metal tubing connected to it. Does it get hooked up to a vacuum port in the intake? Also, does it control the vacuum controlled secondaries? Mine don't seem to be opening. Thanks and I hope this isn't one of those dumb questions. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

The black tube coming from the carburetor connects to the exhaust manifold as a source of fresh air. The fresh air goes into the RH exhaust manifold and comes out. A second tube leads to the threaded fitting on the carburetor below the secondary vacuum diaphragm, just to the rear of the black plastic cap covering the choke bimetallic spring.

All of this is shown in excruciating detail in your copy of the factory shop manual.

any tips as to why the secondaries are not opening up?

How are you checking for opening up your secondary’s? You generally can’t get them to operate by just operating the throttle in park or neutral. Also on most carbs they will not open until the choke is completely off, there is a block that stops them from opening. You can check to see if they are clear by opening the primary’s with the engine off and seeing if you can open the secondary’s with your hand you will feel the vacuum unit movement but that is normal if you can’t move it look to someone see if the choke is not clear
