I just saw a GT 390 Toploader from a 67 mustang on craigslist in los angeles , this would be the same toploader for a 390 cougar as well.

I don't know how much luck I'll have, but I'm thinking of converting my 67 auto Cougar to a 4sp.
The car currently has an open 8". If I'm changing the trans, I want the rear end changed as well.
I may need the center console as well.

My 69 cougar was an automatic. I installed a 5 speed tremic. 2000 rpm at 60. It's great!

This isn't extremely difficult. The XR-7 4-speed console pad may be your toughest problem to tackle!

yep, did mine in '83 and it took a while to find the 4 spd console top plate. Mind you there wouldn't be the internet for another 15 years!

I got the transmission, linkages, hurst shifter, drivshaft, and pedals from a 69 mustang in a junk yard, $125. Brought the pedals back because they didn't fit and bought the clutch pedal from the local Ford dealer! I wanted a 4 spd since I had built up the 302 with the usual (forged pistons, crane cam, holley 650, headers, etc) I still have the original 8" in the car. It's held up all these years!
This just came to mind as I was typing this, I went to the local Ford dealer at the time and bought all 4 wheel opening mldg's as well! Brand new!

I'm curious, if your car is a 390, it should already have the 9".

It's a 390 now, but it was a 289. So, it has a 300 0pen 8 inch.
