I am looking to upgrade my daily driver to a newer Cougar, been watching ebay, but they list a v-6 and it has a v-8 or the other way around. Can someone tell me which number (or letter) In the Vin is the engine code? Thank You.

On any 17 character vin, the 8th character is the engine, 10th is the model year and 11 is the assembly plant.

That applies to GM 17 chartcter vin as well.

The 1990 Cougar wasn't offered with the V8. They only had the 3.8 V6 and the XR-7 had the 3.8 SC engine. 1991 was the first year the MN12 platform received the 5.0 V8 before the 4.6 V8 replaced the 5.0 in 1994.

Hope this helps.
