I have a 1977 302 cougar and it has lost spark. The ignition coil is good and I get 12v at the plugs without it plugged in but when I plug in the coil it drops to 5v. Is this just bad wiring or is there a fault point that would cause this?

Could the points system be my problem? And if so is it something you can just bypass?

Yours should be a Duraspark, not points.
