1973 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertable For Sale!

$15,000

The car is painted red with black leather interior, CD (and stock stereo installed), and chrome rims. Full power convertable.

V8 351 2V

It is in fantastic shape and is stored in my garage near Los Angeles California. I have gone through the car and it looks as if I just drove it off the dealers lot.

I am asking $18,000 OBO NOW $15,000

Last year at Barrett Jackson and Kissimmee Mecum at least 2 71-3 conv sold over 20000.00.

With that said to get strong money for the car you need to market it accordingly.

Buyers love Marti reports, They want to be able to legitimize the car, shows if the car is a color change, the options are original or added etc. You don't give much history. Is it an original LA DSO, or did the car start its life in Minneapolis. i.e. was it a solid car to start or is it a bondo buggy. from your pictures the car looks nice. Be sure you have pictures of the under carriage floor pans inside the 1/4 panels - all of the potential problem areas. Don't just have 30 different exterior shots of your car with different backgrounds.

Give the details i.e.

20000 miles on an engine rebuild, needs brakes, a/c works. Could be driven to the east coast - no worries etc. And list the options it has. One can see a/c, power windows etc. Does it have a Tilt, power Seat, etc.

Its like staging a house - highlight the cars strong points and be honest about any possible weak points. I think you can get into your price range. Other than a few small detail issues - from what I can see your car is turn-key and could not be duplicated for the price by buying a 3000.00 project car.

Thank you for your help. I will have to look into ordering the Marti report.

I am confident that I can drive it accross the country and will have to take some photos of the undercarriage.

The first interested buyer who see's this car in person will realize the fantastic shape it is in and get a great deal for only $15,000. I was listing it earlier for $18,000 since I have seen them sell for even more, but I do not want to wait a long time period before it sells.

If you want to have ANY chance of getting your number, please note that "convertable" is spelled "convertible".

I saw the green 72 convrt go for 22k last year. this is right there. I like the magnum wheels and tires. This is the final year for the convert. They got Discs up front as standard equipment. prob at 17k in this economy.

This is good information. It shows that car was originally one of 276 XR7 conv shipped to the LAX DSO, Originally Bright Blue Metallic with a black leather interior. The car was built Nov of 72. 351 2v with an FMX trans - I don't have time this am to look up the axel ratio.

The Marti report will help fill in additional gaps.

I would recomend putting together any additional documentation I.E. receipts, Last year I had a friend that sold a 71 XR7 Conv - He basically had all of the repair receipts going back into the 70's, He had over 26000.00 in receipts from repaints, to engine builds etc. Anything like that the documents the cars mecanical/and body history back as far as you can go.

Like I said befor Its like selling a house and you have receipts for a new roof, and furnace help greatly.

Anything you can say about the car - like engine rebuild at 102000 miles in 2003, or all original sheet metal, or rear 1/4 panel replaced when repainted. This all means something to an educated car buyer. Imo Your best approach is a complete decloration of the cars condition. If the car needs a new top, say so - this is far better than haveing a buyer show up and putting the top up and then he gets the surprise of finding out it needs to be replaced.

I don't know if you have ever seen one of Don Rush's ebay adds for selling a car. He probably has a minimum of 50-75 pictures of the car. And goes into a complete discription of what is wrong and right with the car. Somebody purchasing a car from Don will not be surprised.

I know it may seam like alot of extra work but it will educate your potential buyers and help you sell the car. Your discription while it may be 100% true, when your potential buyer might be in Chicago, filling in the gaps and presenting the car as a premium product will make the 2000 + miles distance worth it.

You may also want to consider having the car appraised by an independent appraiser. And make that available to your potential buyers.

I think the car looks very nice...I would recommend you spend some time on the engine bay the exterior and interior look excellent but the engine bay just needs some touch ups to match the rest of the car....

This car was originally one of 276 XR7 convertibles shipped to the LAX and was originally Bright Blue Metallic. It was built in November of 1972.

I start the car about twice a week and let it idle. I drive it about once a week just around the block and back.
You can drive this car to the West Coast to the East Coast and back... it runs that well.

1973 is the last year of the convertible!

If I were you? Get rid of all the fluff. 80% left on the brakes? I wouldn't really care about a $25 set of brake pads. You mention "on a Battery Tender near Los Angeles", whether this is a military installation or a device to keep the battery charged, it's just more fluff. How about VIN/Door Tag/Buck Tag data? What options are on the car? This is the kind of pertinent info that is important to an informed buyer.
