My 71 XR7 has been giving me the biggest headache over the past week, so I broke down and took it to a mechanic well trusted and this is what happened. I had thought the carb(holley 4160) was screwed up, then upon further thinking I advanced the timing and wallah! It started to run better....but thhheeeennnn.... worse than before. So as i said I took it to a buddy. A well trusted mechanic, so he set the timing and played with the carb and this is what he said. No matter what he does it wont run right because the distributor is bad, a air gap, causing it to move back and forth, causing my back in forth in the acceleration. My issue is this, the car is a 1971 and the motor is a early 80's 302, obviously not original because they didnt put 302s in the 71-73s. The ignition module is from the 71, but there arent points, so the person who installed the motor altered everything to fit. Im trying to figure out what distributor I need to replace mine with. Anyone?
