1969 Engine Swap Recommendations/Suggestions

This is my first posting here.
If I need to do anything different, like posting this question in another forum, please be patient with me and let me how to correct what I have done wrong.

As a young teenager, the very first car I went to look at was a '67 Cougar XR/7.
The owner wanted $300, but he could not get it started and that spooked me, so I left.
If I had been smarter or had taken someone with me, I might could have used that to my advantage to get a better price.
Later, I owned a 1976 Cougar XR/7 powered by a thirsty 400 V8.
It's C6 went out twice, so I traded it for a thrifty '81 base model Cougar, which powered by a 200 I6.
That '81 was basically a retrimmed Fairmont and in my opinion was a very plain and boring car.
While for the last 20ish years, I have been into Full Sized Jeeps: Wagoneers, original Cherokees, Grand Wagoneers and J series trucks...
...I have never forget about those sporty Cougars of the 60's and how I have always wanted one.

Currently, I am looking at a clean, straight with very little rust, 1969 Cougar XR/7 project.
Sometime is the distance past, its 351 Windsor was blown up and is now locked up.
I was told by the owner, that he was told it was unbuildable, not even good for a core.
So, it's been parked for a long time and now the owner is ready to sell.

Before I drag this thing home, I need to have some sort of plan or it will just sit at my place like where it is now.
1. Should I locate another 351 Windsor of the same vintage?
2. I know there are fair amount of late model, roller cam 351 in the salvage yards around me. I could convert one of these back to a carb and install it.
3. Use a modern 5.0L from a Fox Body Mustang?
4. FE Big Block?
5. Something else I have not thought about?

I have no idea if the transmission in this project is any good.
If the engine was abused and blown, my guess is the transmission was not treated any better.
If I find a modern engine, should I get its AOD or 4R70W that might come with the newer engine.

Comments? Suggestions? Opinions? Flames?

Thank you

I would stick with a 351-W as they can be real powerhouses. From a stock 325 horse up to a stroked version (408-427 CID) you can get 450 to over 500 horsepower in a small block! As for transmission I would go a AOD or possible a manual as FMX trans are getting hard to find parts for.

Just my opinion,

David
The 351W is the way to go for sure. Maybe start with the short block from a late 1980's pickup, then get the 408 or larger stroker kit, aluminum heads and intake. It all bolts in, many good transmission choices too.

I am a Cleveland forever fan if you can find a 70 or 71 4v they will have the good heads also the bell housing will bolt up to a AOD so you can run a 3.70 rear and have a 2.56 gear for cruise and put a 2000 plus converter with a lockup that takes no wiring good off the line and bread cruise but be careful to get the early closed chamber heads
So did you get the car? Non-running cars are my favorites.
