Taking it apart!

Taking it apart!

This is what the cat is looking like these days. The front panels/grill is off. Engine is out. One question, What do you use to get the fender goo stuff off.

Hmmm, looks just my 73 'AlphaCat' as it sits today. Mine has been in this condition since 1984!

Anyway, the best way to get the factory rustproofing/sound deadener off is to apply mineral spirits with a brush, let soak for a day or so, then use putty knife. Or you can try heating it gently with a torch with a flame spreader attachment (being careful not to burn any wiring harnesses, etc,) and again scrape it off with a putty knife. Good luck!

if it was anything like the undercoating on my 67, mineral spirits didnt do crap. I had to hit it with a wire wheel (in reverse) to get it off. Tough stuff. Wet sanding works too, but is slow.

Crazycat,

Patience, my man, patience! My undercoating came off better with just plain old scraping, and then letting it soak in mineral spirits. The wire wheel approch just gummed up my wheel and melted the undercoat. I still had to go back to the mineral spirits method to clean up the mess I made.
