    Northeast Ohio: Upcoming Events

I would post this in the "Upcoming Events" Section, but nobody really looks there. So here it goes. There are tons of things coming up this season. But a few really stand out and might be of interest to those here.

Saturday, June 2nd, is the kickoff to the Hot Rod Power Tour. It will be held at the IX Center. This is the first time Cleveland has had an "official" stop on the tour let alone the kickoff to the whole thing. You don't have to be registered or even planning on going on the tour. You can still come to the gathering. Expect several THOUSAND cars to be there along with the staff of the magazine, numerous aftermarket parts vendors, and even a celebrity or two. Personally I can't go on the tour but I will be at the kick-off. I have a friend coming in from the Chicago area along with 3 or 4 or his buddies and their cars and two buddies from the Akron area who will be taking at least part of the tour. My dad and his buddy are registered to be long haulers.

I realize this is the same weekend as Carlisle. But if you're looking for something that is not just Fords and is quite a bit closer to home, this is it.

June 12th is the official Cougar and Mustang Cruise Night at Solon Commons. Those of you who have been there before know the drill. Anyone else who would like more info can contact me or reply to this thread.

Finally, July 13-15 is the Goodguys Nationals at the State Fairgrounds in Columbus. If you're into state of the art Street Machines, Customs and Street Rods up to 1972, this is a not to be missed event. This is the first year that my home schedule allows me to go. Expect anywhere from 5-6 THOUSAND cars to be there as well. This one also brings out the likes of Chip Foose, Troy Trepanier and Boyd Coddington who gives out his "Pros Pics" to owners of cars that he particularly likes as well as pretty much EVERY major aftermarket supplier and even the not so major vendors.

I won't be able to get my car out of storage until Memorial Day weekend so I'll be thrashing to get it ready for the first weekend in June. I hope to see some of you at any of these events.

Whew. I thought I was the only one with their ride still in storage.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure I'll be seeing you around.

Actually it is by choice this time. I decided to exercise my Thunderbird for a few weeks. It hasn't been out of the garage since June of 2003. If I had both cars at home right now, the Bird would have to sit outside.

I forgot to mention that at the GoodGuys show, they crown both the Street Rod and the Street Machine of the year. Just to give an idea of the caliber of iron that competes for these, G-Force was the Street Machine of the Year last year.

I'm definitely planning on going to the Solon show, even if my 67 is still a year or so away from being done. Hope to see you guys there.

What should I drive there? -- the gently used 97 Mark VIII, or the new Mustang GT? I'm leaning towards the VIII ( Mustangs, even though I like them, are quite common ).

I'm going to try to convince my brothers to go to the Hot Rod event........sounds cool............

The club might frown on the MarkVIII even as nice as it is. They're supposed to try to keep daily drivers out. But you've seen some of the very rough stuff they have let in there.

You could probably get away with the new Mustang simply because it is Cougar and Mustang night.

What will they be driving Mark? my company is sponsoring the power tour stop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Plan on having my Eliminator there for that event only. June 3 is the date.

One Chicago guy has a real Shelby. I don't remember the year and it was really rough the last time I saw it. I don't know it's current condition but I have to believe it's better. Otherwise, he wouldn't be driving it any great distance. He has a buddy with a Chevy II (Nova). I don't know the other two.

The guys from Akron: One has a 67 Mustang Fastback he's had since the early 80s. The other has a 429 powered early 70s Torino that he's had just as long.

Dad's buddy has a 74 Vette and dad will be driving his Custom 67 Bonneville 'Vert. "The Barge." I can post a pic of the Vert since that's the only car I have a picture of. Plus it will be easy to find in the sea of muscle cars that make up 98% of the cars on the tour.

Don't know about the other cars, but it shouldn't be a problem picking your dad out of the crowd... I was hoping maybe you were going to let him drive your Cougar.

I'd have no problem with him taking mine. But he doesn't want to have to pay the fuel bill it's going to require.

The Bonneville never made it out last season. So he wants to blow it out a little this year.

    Bump

Back to the top since the Power Tour is coming up this Saturday.

But I'm NOW hearing conflicting reports that the kick-off party on Saturday at the IX Center may not be free as it has been in years past. I'm hearing $20 for the car, you and a passenger.

But what I'm wondering is how will they know that I'm not planning to come in and register for the whole tour? I guess I'll just have to figure it out when I get there.

If it is POURING RAIN, then I'll still be there in the daily. It doesn't make sense to trash the Hero for just one day. If I was able to actually go on the Tour, that would be a different story.

Look for the "Old Guys Rule" threesome from Florida on the Tour. Barry Margolis(conv cat) and his other retired guys will be long haulers. They go every year. Barry will be driving his '77 Cougar station wagon instead of his '70 XR7 conv this year, not sure whether Sonny will take his '77 Cougar wagon or his '66 Cyclone GT conv. Cecil will be in either his '68 Cougar or his '69 XR7 conv. Party time!

The power tour just isn't in the cards this year.
Some "friends" are driving in from Michigan to see the Tigers. I hope they don't want to go to the rock hall. Blech. It would be fun to drive to Kalamazoo though. I went to college there and would like the chance to re-live the experience.

Might be at the IX in the early hours but the baseball game starts at 7. Plus the Cav play at 8:30. The Stanley cup playoffs are at 8.
