Hey all,

I was going through some of my old printouts and came across this old posting listing different member's wheel and tire size combos, including backspacing.

Since there have been so many wheel/tire postings recently, I thought I would revive it. Please add/modify your combo in the list if you are so inclined.

I have an update to the list: My rears are now 18X10 with 4.75 backspace and a 295/45-18 tire. This is accomplished by use of air-ride suspension.

Thanks.

Perhaps we should mention the small fender flares that Mark has on the rear of his car as well. If a 295 would fit without mods under a 68, I'd have them already. :sun:

Once I have the final backspacing figured out on my 18" wheels, I will contribute the info.

cheers

Right you are Ed! I neglected to mention those. They've been there so long that I forget that they are even there. Although, I think I could get the 295s to fit without the flares if I was able to get different backspacing on the wheels. That and the inner wheelwell work we did could be enough to make it work. But, I'll never be able to find out on this car since the flares are basically permanent.

I'd have to disagree with you there Mark. Unless you got into doing mini-tubs on the car, that much tire isn't going to go on a 67 - 68, assuming stock ride height or lower.

Last fall, before my Coug went away for the season, we had it up on the hoist here at the dealership doing a few small things. I had a rear wheel off the car, so out of curiosity, I was trying a few of the late model Mustang OE and aftermarket wheels we have on display here. One of them was a Torq-Thrust II, 17 x 9.5", with 6.25" backspacing for a 94 - 04 Mustang application (no tire mounted on it). A 9.5" wheel is about 10.5" (approx. 270 mm) edge to edge. It was almost against the leaf spring on the inside, and very close to the fender lip on the outside. So IMO a 295 section width tire would not fit in that same space, if the car actually had to roll and drive. LOL My guesstimate is that a 265 or maybe a 275 width tire would be the maximum, depending on the ride height of course. If the car is raised enough that the wheel opening arch is higher than the tire, you can get away with more width obviously.

cheers
Ed N.

Right Ed. I understand what you're saying and I agree with you. 295s aren't going to fit in a stock wheelwell. But mine aren't stock. We did some minor massaging way back in the 80's to fit the L60-15s that were so popular then. It's not really mini-tubbed but kind of. So in MY case I think I could make it work without the flares.

Just trying to clarify.

That's cool. Where did you alter, was it the inner wheelwell above the frame rail and leaf spring? Just curious ... :)

Yes. We heated up the inner fender lip just above the frame rail and bent it inward a little to make more clearance. But we also trimmed the bracket that holds the bumpstop. The bracket is now only the size of the rubber bumper. With a stock 69 9" rear, my last set of 17X11 rims with 5.75 backspacing fit fine will room still left on the inside. I was shopping for a pair of 305/45/17 tires for those rims. But then found that they were discontinued. So I had to go with the 18s.

As the originator of the wheel/tire list, please send additions to me so I can add them to the master file. Any modifications are important so I can keep wheel/tire combos that fit w/o problems separate from those that require mods. I definitely don't want someone to spend $1000+ on tires and wheels based on this list to then find out it only works with some specific aftermarket part or shaved wheel wells. I'll compare the list above with what I have and probably hit up posters of new entries for additional info to make sure all the pertinent info is captured and then post the updated list.

Thanks,

Well, I'm not sure about how well the underlines work but the site doesn't allow tabs or multiple spacing to line things up so here is the updated info. Thanks for the updates.

For guys like me that are too picky, it would be interesting to get (if possible), the brand and model of the tires used as well as the sizes, for the list. The reason being, as you may know, actual tire dimensions can vary quite a bit between different models of tires. For my 5.0 Mustang race car, I remember having 3 different brands of 245-50-16 track compound tires sitting in my garage at the same time. From 5 feet away, you could easily see the variations in the width and height of the tires.

Could be important info for a maxxed out tire fitment. One brand in a certain size may fit, but another one might not. Knowing the brand and model would allow us to compare the dimensions of the tire we are planning to use, with the dimensions of a kwown to fit tire from the manufacturer's website (if it's a current production tire).

Just a thought ... :)

cheers

True, I've run into that also. Too bad I didn't think of it a couple of years ago when I started this file. :(
But, if anyone here has recently added something or has something that matches something listed above, send me the tire brand & model line and I'll start filling it in from here on.

another tire size question < sorry>

on my 70 coug xr7 i have the original sports wheels still in great shape with yes you guess it the old dunlop qualifer , te car has 57 k miles> if i would to keep those wheels then replace the tires something more up to date what would be the right size
but if i would buy a set of 15 magnum what would be the right size as well
hope some one will answer that
take care terry :cyclops:

New "Paws" for the Cat

Hi all,

I took the easy way out for my new '69 convertible with Winston Winner G/T's on 14x7 SS Cragers (I'll add a pic with the wheels this evening).

Front - 205/70/14 Back - 235/60/14 ...so much for rotating tires.:burnout:

$940 total with alignment at Big O.

Here's my wheel/tire setup on a 69 XR 7: 16x7 Grand Marquis lace-spoke wheels. 4 3/4" backspace. 225/60R16 Continental TouringContact tires. No clearance issues.

Always glad to help, Bruce. I would have posted the info sooner, but I kept forgetting what the backspace was.

#26 ·
Bruce,
i will be shopping for new tires and rims in the upcoming weeks. Would it be possible for you to email me the whole list you have? My email is demieville@horizoncable.com . Thanks in advance.
