School me on power steering on my 69 cougar

So it is whining . It drives easy and turns great until I stop. Then its tight as all get out. Nothing you hadnt heard so far huh. Lol
I added some fluid and its wanting to push itself out of the fill tube. Only filling it to the fill when hot line. I tried getting the tires off the ground and turn wheel trick. Didn't seem to help. A gentleman told me today I could bleed it at the steering box. Also what is the technical name for the power steering systrm on these cars ?

Whining is caused usually by someone using the wrong fluid. You should only use Ford brand ATF in the system. Anything else will cause cavitation, ie foaming fluid. If allowed to continue long enough this moaning will ruin the pump. Your symptoms of low assist at parking lot speeds suggests that it is already ruined. You cannot install Dexron, Mercon, or anything that is called Power Steering Fluid. As the dipstick says, "Use only Ford ATF".

The system in your Cougars was designed by Bendix in the early 1950's. It works well if the parts are in good shape and serviced with the proper fluid.

Ok so I replaced it with one from Summit. I had read to use only type F. Its working wonderfully as of right now. But now am I using the wrong fluid?

Type F is the correct fluid.

Thank you so much for posting this video! The awful steering on my car has been driving me crazy! Now if I could just find a good Cougar mechanic in the San Francisco area...
