Exhaust manifold bolts...how do they go in?

In my over one year long saga of rebuilding the 351W in my '69 Vert I finally got the fresh engine back in. Been so long since I took it out that I don't remember how the stock exhaust manifold bolts go in. The short ones obviously go in the 8 shallower holes but how are the other 8 put in? Bought the "concours" replacement set from NPD. There are 4 standard 2 1/2" bolts, and 4 that are about 3 1/2" studs with a nut as part of the shaft and both ends are threaded. Does each kind go on a certain side, or are they mixed between driver's and passenger side? What is the purpose of the outside threaded portion of the 3 1/2" studs? I can't think of anything that would have been on them when I took the engine out.
Also, since it is a '69 I don't use gaskets between the manifolds a H pipe, correct?
    Thanks!

The ones with the studs go in the center 2 deeper holes on each side. They would hold the lift hooks. It sounds like yours are missing, not a big deal. A lot of people removed them to make changing plugs easier.

Yup, my lift hooks weren't present, but will put them back in the correct way. And how about if I use manifold to exhaust pipe gaskets?
    Thanks badcatt!

There should be "donut" exhaust gaskets between the H pipe and the manifolds. Ford never used any gaskets between the manifold and the cylinder heads on the 289 / 302 / 351W, originally there was simply a light coat of lithium grease.
