Wheel and tire size fit for ‘68

I have been researching and reading around and am a little confused. I cannot get a definitive answer on what will actually fit on my stock ‘68 GT. I would like to go with 17’s all around if they would fit so when I upgrade the brakes I will have plenty of room plus I like the look of being able to see them through the wheels.

Question: Would 17’s fit? If so what type of backspacing? They could be 17X7 or 17x8 not particular on this as much as being able to put 17’s on. What tire size would guarantee no rubbing. Seen too many combos that rub here or rub there. Any help would be appreciative. Currently have 14’s on but the tires are done for anyways so might as well get the look I want.

This thread was started a long time ago. A lot depends on the condition of your suspension, if original, or the geometry of it if you have modified. Also, you mention upgrading brakes but don't say what brakes you are upgrading to, that also will make the fine art of guesstimation challenging.

A safe bet is sticking with the 7" wide front's and the 8" wide rears with 225 & 245 series tires respectively. Here is a link to the safe sizes mentioned, even though I don't particularly care for this style; https://www.cjponyparts.com/foose-k...Qadsvv0Lg7XUIPG9YTjFahj6H_JKagaEaAoSsEALw_wcB

Here is a riff on the popular Torque Thrust style; https://www.cjponyparts.com/b-g-rod...metal-with-machined-lip-1965-1973/p/W1055S-B/

Lot's of options out there...
