: I was hit

I moved to town about 8 months ago and rented a cheap place, it didn't have a garage for my cougar and I didn't like the neighbors. I found a new place with a garage so I can park my car and motorcycle in there and moved in last week.

well...... I left my car on the street for the last time before I moved it to its new home and then the next morning it was hit. Of course the don't have insurance so that is one more hassle I have to deal with.

I feel your pain! I had something similar happen when I was living in Austin. The ONE night I left my 442 on the street it got side-swiped and the bastich who hit me didn't stop.

It really sucks, but it could've been worse. You know who did it, they didn't hit your quarter panel, and it looks like they missed your rocker panel too.

I'd at least get my pound of flesh

It looks like a new (used) door will be all you need - the quarter panel and the front fender look OK. So repairs will not involve welding, fill and sanding. Just bolt and align, after the door is painted. It could have been a lot worse of it happened 2 feet further back.

Stuff like this makes me soooooooo mad. Most states require liability insurance, people still don't have it, illegals cross our borders everyday, and I need a passport to travel....(shaking my head) guess I am becoming my Grandpa. Sorry man, maybe he has someting of value to collect, obviously a pound of flesh just ain't enough. Jim

I talked to an auto body shop looks like this thing is going to cost between $1000-$1300 just to get the door hung and painted, thats with me switching all the other stuff window, crank, and latch. For that kind of money I think I will take the chance of painting it myself. My situation is that I can't use an air compressor that would be to loud so after searching around I found this - http://www.eastwood.com/earlex-spray-station-economy-kit-1-5mm-and2-0mm.html

After talking with the body working guys sounds like i need a buffer capable of 2000 rpm I'll do some more shopping but it will have to be electric too.

Has any one else done a air compressor free job or used the above gun?

That is just nuts. Hand over a replacement door and they can paint and hang it for you for much less then a grand.

People are just freekin idiots. My car was bashed from every angle, been through the insurance dance (always some other knucklehead at fault) a few times....grrrrr.

Make sure to check that your window glass and frame is Ok, also your interior panels may have gotten warped or the pins sheered.

People who hit collector cars of any stripe should be shot on sight. :badass:

Ebeo1, First of all, sorry you got hit, that really sucks!
Im in Canada and we are required by law to have auto insurance here, is that not the case in Columbia where you are?
Also! does the party which did the damage feel any obligation to compensate you at all? Just curious. :) I'm glad the experts here feel it could have been much much worse then it is.

When my brother and me went to the 86 Expo in Vancouver BC we got hit and the driver did not have insurance.

i dont think it will be as simple as painting a door and hanging it on, the fender and quarter panel need to be blended to ensure a color match.

Man, that sucks!!!!! There is not a worse feeling than coming outside to find something has been messed up on your car.

The parties responsible offered me their condolences and promised me they would take care of things to get my car repaired (once the cop showed up). They are not insured looks like they donít have any money either and to tell the truth I donít think they are going to keep their promise to me. On to other news I got two different estimates both were the same so if things go smoothly Iíll have this done by the end of the month.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Bummer on the car, still doors and fenders out there just have to know where to look, ask, etc..

I'm pretty sure that's Missouri USA, no tthe drug captial of the world, but that's ok for not getting it right it's cold up in Great White North.

Most US states have laws "aboot" having insurance.

BTW I was a Canuck, join the US Navy and became a US citizen, so I can "dis" ya.

That is as unusual as winning the lottery! Here in Vancouver unless some jackass decided to try his luck and drive with no insurance, it is mandatory. We have to have a sticker on our rear license plate that has the date of expiration and renewal is every year from that date. Also here in Canada you don't get plates with the car when you buy it as you need to buy insurance to get the plates or else you plain and simply can't drive it. If I drove down the road with no plate or insurance I would have people screaming at me, calling the police on their cell phones, or trying to stop me to tell me I have no plate or insurance. You can't even park a car on the side of the street without plates on it or some type of insurance, you can only keep it on your property and even if the mail man hurts himself on it in your driveway you are liable and that will fall onto you or your home insurance.

Insurance laws very state to state. In Maine, you have to have your insurance card with you when you go to register the car or they will not register it. You have to have insurance to buy a car and drive it off of the lot with temp tags.

In New Hampshire, no proof of insurance is required and many people drive without it, unless you are financing your car....then only the finance companies are watching if you carry insurance.

Or you can be like my ex-wife. She gets insurance only long enough to register whatever wreck she is driving and then she cancels the policy after a month. That is in Texas.

In Maine, they are vigilant about insurance. I have removed insurance off of my Cougars when I put them away for the winter, and get a letter in the mail in a week or two demanding to know the status of my cars and why the insurance has been removed and that if I do not respond that they will suspend the registrations on my cars.

Bottom line in my book is that it is up to the owner's honesty and integrity and sense of fiscal responsibilty about the insurance that they keep (or don't keep).

Sorry but I just read your comments and you are right about the drug capital but the unfortunate part is Canada being to nice to let all the asians move in so easily as they are the only ones causing all the stories you hear about. The laws are also too easy going here but we won't get into that! As far as great white north well Ontario is in the 100's currently and Vancouver just went through 2 weeks of over 100 degree weather and we are still in the 80's today.

Aboot is something you put on your foot and haven't heard anyone say that since Bob and Doug Mackenzie in the late 70's. Stereotypes are hilarious!

And yes we can dis you as you have obviously been away too long to know any better and for every deserter of Canada to move to the US and join the army we seems to get 5 more coming in!:biggrn2:

Just playing with you though as I can dis you as I was born in the US as my family was in the military and was stationed up here and decided to stay after my father retired from it.

I got some good news and bad news for every one, the car went to the body shop earlier this week I meant to post that here but didn't get around to it and I just got it back. I think that was a pretty good turn around Wednesday morning to Friday afternoon. Thats the good news the bad news is the people that hit me stopped answering their phone so I got a summons from the court. The address they had provided on the accident report is no longer their residence or was a fake so short of higher a private detective I think I am sol on getting them to pay for it.

1st the door looks real good as does the whole car. Sorry to here about the situation with the people who hit your car. Just give the info to your insurance company and let them handle it. Does your insurance company have a copy of the accident report.

I would assume the report has their driver's license number on it. You might fake the address but not the state license and it is sure to pop up some day. I have a friend here who with just that number would probably have the person located within a few days as he does security checks for sensitive government jobs.

Liability insurance is manditory in Missouri. The motorist who hit your ride was cited for no insurance. They have a court date in the near future. File a claim in small claims court. You will catch up with them there. They are going to have some fines and all their finanical judgments which will be handled through the court. The court system won't let them slide,... they will be on em'. Some people have no ethical values,... If I were in their situation, I would do whatever to make it right,..flip burgers at night, cut your lawn, clean the gutters, paint your house,... anything! Make them accountable,.. in the long run, you will be doing them and yourself a favor.
The first thing the judge will ask, when they go to court for no insurance is, "was there an accident".
