: Major Rust Repair Shop ?

June 4th, 2009, 10:42 AM
After LMAO at the "my car is so rusty that ..." post,

... and because I've almost got our Cat back on the road,
(been working on it "continuously"for the past year)

... I'm actually starting to consider opening up another can of worms,
- our 67 Comet Cyclone Convertible - wife's aunt bought it new

It's from Connecticut ... 20 years in Ca. didn't fix the rust ?

Any suggestions on how to find + choose a good place to do
ALL of the rust repairs ?

I know ... $$$$ ...
... my wife wants to save it "no matter what it costs"

I'm not sure anyone in California can do rust repairs like that.
I'm half-joking.

But seriously, does anyone out there ever do rust repair that extensive?

You may need to ship it to a guy in Jersey.:lol2:

LOL _ there is one very successful technique I've heard of to accomplish this. All you have to do is remove the radiator cap about 6", remove the rusty vehicle, and drive another rust free '67 Comet under it! Probably much cheaper than fixing the original! ;>)

I know a guy who paints rusting POS look alikes for a living if you are interested! (Paints model kits to look like barn and field finds - kinda cool really)

I'd look for a viable donor - even a 2 door if the vert parts salvageable. Might be different door lengths on the vert though??...IDK

My vote? Classic Creations, they are located in Central Florida. They have been featured numerous time in Mustang Monthly (I believe) for similar work. Merv Rego is the owner and all I can tell you is my experience from around 2001. I bought a 67 Mustang "A" code convertible for about $500.00 if I remember. Lots of rust issues I was well aware of and the interior was trashed but it was complete. Why this car? Lotsa great options including "A' code, auto, front disc, P/S, power top and delux exterior group. Also, exported to France and in my favorite color, Dk Moss Green and Saddle interior. But the main reason was I didnt want to spend $10K to $15K on a car to find out it needed $5 of metal replaced. With this car I knew what I was getting into as I wanted to do a complete resto on a rust free, straight body.

So, I stripped everything out and took it to Merv Rego's shop. Merv replaced both quarters, cowl hats, some firewall, side cowl panels, full floors and one inner rocker panel. Battery apron, the panel between rear window opening and the deck lid, some door work on one side and added a rust free door along with many other odds and ends. There was more I'm not remembering right now. They even removed the undercoating and applied all the seam sealer. What I got back was a body that needed nothing but block sanding out for final paint. Excellent workmanship in every detail. Without looking at his invoice now I would not be able to tell what was done to the car. I believe the bill was $6,800. and worth every penny in my opinion.

I now see you are in Long Beach. Soooo, make this recomendation for those on my side of the Mississippi !!!
