I'm offering up a car I bought last week to the Cougar Clan before I put it up on eBay. I'm going to sell this car either whole or in parts, but I would rather sell it whole. I might make more money parting it out, but since it is a nearly complete XR7 'vert, and I've cut up too many of those over the years. Someone else can do this one.
I'd rather this go to a Cougar guy who can convert his existing Cougar 'vert to an XR7. So, here goes:
1969 XR7 Convertible
H code 2bbl Windsor
Black (now red)
White interior
3.00:1 open rear
FMX
Air conditioning
Power Steering
Manual drum brakes (what were they thinking?)
Nothing earth-shattering here. But now the good news:
The engine compartment is bone stock, complete and original, including all the front dress items (pulley and brackets) including the A/C. It has the original "Ford" logo radiator (A/C 3-row) and fan shroud. The whole engine compartment could be lifted out, cleaned, painted and reassembled into a GT350, Mach One clone or other Ford. Maybe they aren't rare in other places, but original engine compartments are hard to come by up here. There is a Holley 2bbl carb on it, but the original is in the trunk. Everything is date-coded. Engine starts, but runs on a gas can for fuel (I’m assuming skunk gas is the problem).
The interior is also nearly complete. The door panels are dirty, but not bad. Door pulls cracked or missing. Complete seats (will need recovering), full console with a perfect 3-bump arm rest lid. Correct deluxe seat belts (for a convertible). The only items I see missing in the interior are the armrests, radio and the convertible top switch. Rim-blow steering wheel, full gauge cluster, switches, etc.
All XR7-specific trim is there, including the convertible top well trim, door caps, etc. The hood lip and passenger eyebrow are good cores. Driver’s eyebrow is toast. Driver’s headlight grille assembly is a good core, passenger and center piece are cracked. Front bumper is a good core. Front gravel shield is useable. Rear chrome trim is pitted beyond redemption, but I would buy Don’s replacements anyway. Rear valence is badly damaged.
The bad news:
You guessed it; rust. Lots of it and in lots of places; a true New Jersey car. Maybe too much to fix economically. Less than I’ve seen some ECI’s working on, but certainly more than I am willing to deal with. However, there are some useable parts on it. The doors can be reused (I’d call them between B and C grade on Don’s scale). The trunk lid is OK (also between a B and a C). The convertible top and mechanism to include the latch-down pieces is complete and working. The top is actually good for a driver car (white). The rear window is toast.
Basically, a complete and original XR7 convertible that can be used as a donor for someone converting a standard convertible. That’s what I would do with it. If I can’t sell it whole, I will part it out. There’s gotta be someone out there doing a Mach One clone that can use this engine compartment.
