Since it's out of my price range I haven't attempted to contact the seller to see if it's still available. But I stumbled upon this ad for a GTE.

A service replacement block was originally intended to replace a production block that was worn too badly, or cracked, etc. to be repaired. In other words as a repair part. In a sense some of them back the first "crate" engines, since you could get them either bare block, short block (with crank, rods, pistons and cam bearing) or longblock with heads, pushrods, lifters, etc.). Nothing wrong with service replacement engines per se, they just aren't "regular production" and therefore for don't count as "original" engines in a strict concours sense.
Has anybody here - other than the owner - seen this car in person?
Thanks,
Fran

Fran -- I've seen it several times. It's been on the Registry for years. If you would like more information, call me 360-668-0243 Jim Pinkerton GT-E Registrar.
Just to give you all an idea on how under appreciated the GTE is... When us Calgary Cougar folks got together last summer and Darren brought his 100% pristine GTE in (He actually drove it to the meet) we decided to meet with the Mustang club guys.. 3-4 Cougars showed up among 20-30 Mustangs and in the midst is Darren's imamculate GTE... I was in awe of the car and hung around it abit and I think aside from the other Cougar guys there not a single Mustang guy even gave him the time of day.
Pretty dissapointing when it was obviously one of the most ioncredible cars there. They had no idea the opportunity they missed. And they are supposedly Ford guys too.. lol. What they really missed was the 2 blocks of smoking asphvault that Darren left trailing when he pulled out of the parking lot for the night...Heck yeah.. An Original 427 GTE screaming down the street sideways... "but it's not a mustang?"

All of the Mustang guys had 427 envy in 1968.
I would have to say that only the hardcore muscle car people in the world even know what a GT-E is or was.
Most Mustang guys aren't even aware that classic Cougars never received a 6 cylinder engine.
Most aren't even aware that all 1969-73 Cougars came with a 9 inch rear end.

Take a look at some of the obscure and not so obscure Classic Cougar parts we have available, now with even more Ford part numbers.
Cougar people are fanatics about their cars, Cougars, just like Mustang people are about their Mustangs, and Camaro guys with their Camaros. I don't think it's so much about not giving a particular car its due as much as it is about personal interest. With Cougars, less were made than Mustangs, they were marketed differently, built differently, and hence have a different following. I am a Ford guy, I own severl Mustangs and have owned a Cougar and will own another. When looking for my first car in high school, I looked for either a Mustang or Cougar. A Mustang was found first. I think most "car guys" appreciate other makes and models, even Cougars, they just have their favorite(s). Being that Cougars are not seen very often, less people are educated about them, especially the G and GTE models. I don't think this means they are not respected, just not very well known. But, Cougars are not alone, I had a few people think my 1973 Challenger (long gone) was a Camaro.
Most guys I know, Ford and other brands, when they hear about a car with a 427, their eyes twinkle a bit and they go "oooooh". The respect is there, once they know. As for knowing specifics about Cougars, most Mustang guys can probably give stats about Mustangs that most others don't know, as can a Camaro guy, a Corvette guy....it's because they love their cars.
As for prices, the market sets the price/value. Simply putting a GTE in an auction may give Cougars and GTE's in particular more exposure, but that doesn't mean it'll drive the price up.

If it gets advertised correctly ,and gets a good Saturday time slot it will sell for great money. The auction house must be made aware of what you have and how rare it is. Make sure your description and pictures that you submit says it all. There are plenty of people with plenty of money looking for JUST THE RIGHT CAR to add to their collection. Also, they don't call them retail red for nothing. As for prices, the market sets the price/value. If you can't bite, don't growl
I think you meant resale red....LOL.....![]()
